Yesterday saw the big day and night for Sligo Sings. If you are a regular reader you’ll know that I sort of accidentally joined the Sligo Volunteer Choir, who were one of the 6 choirs formed especially by the Hawk’s Well Theatre for Sligo Sings.
I’m not a singer by any means but it is something I’ve wanted to try for a long time. 2015 for me has been a year of challenges and here was another one. This was by far the hardest one yet. I have no idea how people can stand up on their own and sing in front of an audience. I almost couldn’t do it yesterday. I was a complete bag of nerves in the rehearsal, I forgot my words, I forgot the dance steps and I stood like a deer in the headlights! All I could hear was my heart pounding…it wasn’t looking good.
I have to say though with the help and encouragement of Niamh Crowley, our choirmaster and the support of all the other members of the choir I managed to do it. The drama classes also helped in a huge way as I just pretended to be someone else when I walked on stage for the concert.
Another thing that helped was that it was my friend Heidi’s birthday and when the Volunteer Centre choir took to the stage Austin, who was the MC, got us all to sing happy birthday. It was a great way to break the ice and settle us all down. Probably not so good for Heidi though!
The audience was great, they clapped along with us during ‘One Day Like This’ and I could see some of them singing during ‘Help’. Niamh was with us all the way, directing us and smiling at us. It was all over way to quickly and in the end I loved every minute of it.
Thanks to the Hawk’s Well for coming up with a great idea. Sligo Volunteer Centre for letting me be part of their choir. Niamh for being such a star and a pleasure to work with and all the lads and lassies in our choir. I’ll really miss it and I hope we do it again.
Thanks to Austin for the pic and Brendan for the video. The video shows all six choirs singing ‘Fix You’ which was the finale – it was something special being one of over 200 voices taking part.
