If you are coming to Sligo or if you live here there’s a walk that you might be interested in. The Sligo Dark Tales tour is a fascinating walk of Sligo town with lots of facts about the dark history of Sligo.
The tour starts at the Riverside Hotel and visits several stops including Sligo Gaol, which closed in 1956. You’ll hear about The Ballymote Slasher and tales of some of the prisoners.
You’ll get to see a Gothic Courthouse and Medieval Abbey. The tour also takes you to the birthplace of Bram Stoker’s mother and you’ll find out about the cholera epidemic which wiped out hundreds of people.
You’ll hear tales of mummies in a local cemetery, a murder on Grattan Street and so much more. It’s a gentle walk so suitable for everyone and you finish your tour at Thomas Connolly’s Pub with a sample of their traditional ale.
I really enjoyed this walk. I went on my own but soon got talking to the people in the group and we had a great chat in the pub. I’d really recommend this. You can find out dates and how to book here.
