Get Up and Go – Sligo 2014

getupandgoI was invited along to the inaugural Get Up and Go event in the Clarion Hotel, Sligo on Saturday. It was an early start with registration at 8.30am and a day full of speakers from all walks of life. I have to admit I’m not the best person at sitting down listening for long periods of time. I’d much rather be out and about (that’s my get up and go….see what I did there!)

The overall message is a clear one and it’s similar to positive thinking which I’m a firm believer in. Negative thoughts and negative people will drag you down.  There is also a big emphasis on doing what you love, again I agree with that. I’m usually at my happiest when I’m behind a camera.

One of the speakers said we should all think about what we wanted to do as a child and go back and do it because that’s what we were meant to do. At one point in my childhood I wanted to be an actress and I’m doing a drama class at the moment (quick plug: free beginners drama classes are on at The Model, Sligo from 10.00-12.30 every Wednesday, if interested just turn up). The other thing I wanted to be was a nurse, I did two weeks of work experience in a hospital and hated every minute of it! So no to that. I’d never been interested in photography so that wouldn’t have crossed my mind and it’s only in the last 7 years that I’ve actually started taking photos. To me this says you are never too old to try something and if there is something you’ve always wanted to do give it a go…but I’m not an expert.

I found Norah Casey really interesting to listen to. I had no idea her husband died a few years ago. I suppose I only know what I’ve seen of her on television. She’s a very good speaker, very down to earth. I liked how she asked some of the audience members what they wanted to do with their lives. I would have liked to have heard more from the audience as there seemed to be some very interesting people there from the brief bit I heard. Norah has a book out called Spark which is about fulfilling the potential in your life.

All in all an interesting day. Lucy was there too and will do her own blog about it.
