Cos Cos

Yesterday after I went to the Sligo Farmer’s Market and the fun day at St. Cecelia’s School I headed to Rathcormac for the Cos Cos Sean Nós Festival. It’s a great festival held over the weekend. Lots to see and do and nice to see such friendly people organising the event. It brought together some of the country’s finest Sean-Nós dancers, musicians, singers, poets and storytellers.

The sun even put in an appearance which in Ireland is always a bonus.

I had a quick look in the hall at the dancers….I took a bit of video but there was so much going on yesterday I accidentally deleted it.

What I really wanted to see was Joe McGowan’s talk and walk. Joe is a mine of information and has published several books about the heritage, folklore and history of County Sligo. He also runs the very popular website Sligo Heritage. I’ve known him for a number of years on Facebook but had never actually met him in person, so it was wonderful to actually do so yesterday. What a warm and charming gentleman he is. Joe’s talk was really interesting, he was telling us all about the May traditions, you can read about it here.

After the talk we went out for a walk to visit a nearby ringfort. It was really interesting listening to the people who live in the area telling us all about it.

It was a lovely afternoon, I only wished I could have spent longer there. I’m looking forward to next years already.
