Happy Birthday to the blog!

Benbulben, originally uploaded by magnum_lady.

Well it’s a year since I started this blog. It’s gone really fast.

So many things happened in the last year, hopefully this year will be quieter.

This was my first blog.

I was reading the Diary of a Country Wife’s blog and she was writing about traditional Ireland.

We first moved here in 1991, it was a real shock to the system compared to the UK. Nothing ever started on time, we were told time was ‘elastic’.
The shops made me laugh, the butchers also sold houses.
The pub was also an undertaker and a hairdressers, handy if you wanted a pint whilst having you hair cut and then happened to kick the bucket!

Lots of the shops had petrol pumps outside. Some still do including the one in our village.

There were lots of little ‘huxter’ shops that sold everything and anything. I spotted one of shop keepers one day running across the road to the supermarket, buying five apple tarts and adding a pound on each one! Buyer beware I suppose.

Things have come on a bit in Sligo although traditional Ireland seems to be alive and kicking in the smaller towns and villages.

  5. Happy Blog Anniversary! Val

Your blog is a fantastic record (both literal and visual) of your life in Sligo.

A real treasure. Keep it coming!

  6. Hi Val
My husband’s family are in South Kilkenny so we always go there. We also try to visit other parts of Ireland. Last June we were in Cong and stopped off in Sligo on the way up to Donegal. My son’s girlfriend also has connections with Sligo.
Glad that your menfolk are making good progress. You certainly have had a difficult time lately. I hope that things will continue to improve for you.
