I’m delighted that Sligo town has a brand new market. The Sligo Indoor Market opened in The Canopy Shopping Centre last Sunday (September 28th) and will run every Sunday until Christmas. It’s on from 11am – 4pm.

Sligo lost two markets in the last year; Achonry Farmers Market and Strandhill People’s Market. Both markets were a sad loss to the community, and an even bigger loss to the small businesses, many of whom lost their livelihoods.

There was a wonderful buzz today in The Canopy, a real sense of community, and that’s what I picked up from many of the stall holders that I spoke to, they missed seeing their fellow stall holders, and their customers. Achonry and Strandhill finished so abruptly that people didn’t get a chance to have a final hurrah and say goodbye to each other.

What I also really like about markets, is that it’s a great chance to pick up something unusual, and maybe something that you might not find in a shop. You also get a chance to meet the makers and creators, and find out more about their businesses.

Some stallholders will be at the market every week, but you’ll also see some new stalls too, so it’s worth popping along for a look. It’s also worth mentioning that the council car parks offer free parking on Sundays, so you can make a day of it. Go to the market, have lunch, go shopping, etc.

I can’t remember the last time I saw Sligo town so busy on a Sunday, except for Christmas. Well done to Clodagh, Berenice (in the photo above, with Photographer Eithne Gallagher) and The Canopy for this wonderful initiative. A special thanks to Clodagh for introducing me to the stallholders, because otherwise I probably would have been too anxious to speak to them.
