It takes a village – community spirit in action

I wrote a blog post about us being without power since the storm. We are on day 6 without power now, and I know we are lucky, and there are people that are far worse than us. I’ve seen such amazing kindness in the community, and I’ve personally had offers of help, and we are so grateful. The two angels who arrived with a generator, so that would could have heat, is something that I’ll never forget.

Dr. James Bonsell has a really useful map of places that are offering support for those without power and/or water. It covers Sligo, Leitrim, and is now expanding into Cavan. You can read more here.

What I really want to highlight is Cafe Fia in Coolaney. When they realised that part of the village was without power they opened to offer those affected lunches and dinners. This venture is wholly managed by volunteers, and they are doing an amazing job. It’s so nice to get a home cooked dinner handed to you, and we’ve enjoyed our lunchtime visits for soup and toast. Even just a change of scenery from a dark house is wonderful.

I’ve also enjoyed chatting to the volunteers – three of them are pictured at the top of this blog (Cherryll, David, and Christine), I’ve also seen Mia, Lorna, Caroline and Lisa, and I know Andrew has been busy cooking up a storm in the kitchen. The food has been free, or people can give a donation if they wish to and if they can afford it. The cafe would love more volunteers, to enable them to open more often. If you’d like to contact them to find out more you can do so via the Facebook page

I also want to give a mention to Flair Hair Salon, who is also in Coolaney Village, they are offering to wash people’s hair, and they will let them charge their phones while their hair is being dried.

It really does take a village. A huge well done to everyone who has helped in any way. You are all amazing.
