Afternoon Tea at Knockranny House Hotel Westport

Last week we took a road trip to beautiful Westport. We left rainy Sligo and just over an hour later we arrived in sunny Mayo. I was invited along to Knockranny House Hotel to try their Afternoon Tea.

The Knockranny House Hotel is about a five minute walk outside Westport town, it’s a 4 star hotel and spa and is a little bit of tranquility away from a bustling town centre.

Afternoon Tea is served in La Fougère Restaurant which has one of the most stunning views I think I’ve ever seen. I don’t think I’d ever watch TV if this was my view. We relaxed as we watched the clouds drift over the majestic Croagh Patrick Mountain.

The staff were excellent, so attentive and friendly. I felt like I was in a 1930s movie as we were served tea and hot chocolate from silver pots as we waited for our Afternoon Tea. We were told if there was anything that we didn’t like on the menu they would be happy to substitute it for something else, so that was a nice touch.

Now where do I begin? The food came out on a three tier silver cake stand – talk about elegance!

The open sandwiches were on the bottom; I had Knockranny smoked salmon, Knockanore cheese, poached chicken and baked ham, they were served on gorgeous brown bread and were all delicious. Lucy had the vegetarian option.

There were scones with butter, cream and jam. They were just fab, I don’t think I’ve ever had a scone as nice as these ones. I’m actually really hungry now just thinking about it.

The sweet treats included carrot cake, cup cakes, fruit pavlova, strawberry cheesecake sponge, chocolate brownie mousse and a hazelnut biscuit cake (similar to Tiffin). All just perfect.

As always I was undecided about what to eat first so I took little bites out of everything! It was just the right amount of sweet and savoury and although we were full up at the end we weren’t uncomfortably full if you know what I mean.

The only thing I regret is that I didn’t have the energy to look around the gardens or Westport itself but it would inspire me to go for a break there. Imagine having that lovely afternoon tea followed by a relax in the spa and watch the sun setting over the mountain? Magic!

Lucy is in the process of writing her own account of her afternoon. Thank you Knockranny House Hotel for inviting us along and for a perfect afternoon.
