After my visit to Marble Arch Caves I headed back to Blacklion for a look around. I’ve often driven through it on the way to Enniskillen but have only stopped a couple of times for the lovely charity shop there. So it was great to do some proper exploring. The peace monument above is in Lough MacNean Park which is a really pretty lakeside park with a great playground.
I followed a sign for ‘The Burren’ and there was me thinking The Burren was in County Clare. This place was recommended to me by the tour guide in Marble Arch and it’s well worth a visit, although it was a bit worrying meeting a lorry on the way up to it (it’s a narrow road).
On the drive up there is a cave, lime kiln and ‘The Big Bog’. If it wasn’t going to start raining I would have walked back down to have a proper look….but that’s a job for another day 😉

The Burren is a Relict Landscape which is a “fossil landscape”. You can see the fossils in some of the rocks. There are also neolithic tombs and it seems to be a neolithic village. It’s really interesting and very well signposted.
I didn’t get to look around the whole forest because I knew it was going to start pouring with rain so I made it back to the car just in time.
Blacklion and The Burren is well worth a visit….and it’s free!
I never knew there was a Burren in Cavan! Thanks for sharing!
