The Holy Well is one of my favourite places in Sligo. I’m not religious at all but I find such a sense of peace there.
People light candles for prayers or wishes. I lit a candle for a friend yesterday.
I had to laugh at the sign that says ‘Don’t drink the water’ but there is a mug there in case you want to 😉 Also it says ‘Don’t put coins into the well’ but people do.
One of my favourites parts of the Holy Well is what I call the ‘Wishing Tree’ (it’s called a rag tree or holy tree). They are all kinds of trinkets, ribbons and momentoes tied to the tree. It’s for special intentions. There is more information about the trees here.

People also leave flowers at the statues.
I was trying the slow shutter speed on the camera. I think it works well on the water.
So that’s it for my Holy Well photos for this blog although I will be back again 🙂

Hi Val, just ro say its lovely to see your photos of the holy well. I have special memories aswell of a couple of masses i
Was at there, one was when I was studying with st angelas college and nuig , Fr Michael who was our tutor and chaplain at st angelas arranged the mass which was lovely we all took part with music and singing etc, the next time was when we were driving through sligo from donegal and i decided to show the boys the well, it wwas nearly dark and when we got there the whole place was lit up with candles, it was a polish mass. We did not understand a word but it was beautiful and then i realised the girl in front was from my course and lived a couple of mins away. So she insisted we went up to her house for tea after it was a magical evening. That same girl olivia is now training to be a nun in knock. They are estate agents in sligo you would prob know her to see, a beautiful looking girl. Anyway thats my story of the holy well. Thanks for reminding me of a lovely place and time.
