King House is a magnificently restored Georgian Mansion located in Boyle, County Roscommon. It was built in the early 1700’s for Sir Henry King, whose family were one of the most powerful and wealthy in Ireland.
After its first life as a home, King House was converted into a military barracks in the 19th century for the famous Connaught Rangers regiment. At the end of Civil War in 1923 the barracks passed into the control of the newly formed Irish Free State Army.
Following many years as a merchants store, King House was saved from demolition in the late 1980s and restored to its former Georgian style by Roscommon County Council.
On Tuesday we went to visit King House, I’d been some years ago with the kids and to be honest it hasn’t changed at all but it’s interesting and best of all this year it’s free to visit. As always I took plenty of photos which are here.
Just a word of warning, watch out for the dungeon 😉
After King House we went to Aunty Bee’s coffee shop just across the courtyard. I had a lovely snickers cheesecake….which I should have taken a photo of but didn’t. I would say if you are going to King House try to go on a Saturday morning and you can see the farmer’s market as well. Also it’s free to park on the street opposite the house, so that’s handy to know.

I was really surprised when I visited King House at how interesting it was. That was about 2 years ago now I was there and by the look of your pics they have done a bit more.
I’ve learnt not to judge some places as its often the ones that I dont think will be good turn out to be the most informative and enjoyable 🙂
I think it’s a lovely place. I’m always interested in history. Even better that it was free.
Looks like you had a lovely week and got around to seeing lots of great places. Has Lucy finally had a fringe? 🙂
Thanks Michelle, still got more to blog about. Yes Lucy now has a fringe and much shorter hair (she cut it herself).
