Going underground

Going underground, originally uploaded by magnum_lady.

Jono wanted to go to Marble Arch Caves yesterday for his birthday. It’s about an hours drive from here so not to bad. It’s in Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.

It’s a really great place so if you get a chance to go then it’s well worth it. It cost £18 for the four of us. For that you get a guided tour into the caves. It starts with a short boat ride along the Cladagh River underground. Then the guide tells you all about the caves. It is fascinating. Who knew there were such things as cauliflowers, brocoli and rashers growing underground……of course not real ones but ones formed in the caves.

The tour lasts for an hour and fifteen minutes and ends with having to walk 150 steps up to the surface. It was so cold in the caves and the air felt really pure. Although it wasn’t that hot a day the heat really hit us when we got out.

There is also a restaurant in the visitors centre and lots of nature walks so you could easily spend the day there.

More photo’s can be found on my flickr page.

  1. I love the Marble Arch Caves. Being from Tyrone originally, it was always a great day out when we were smaller/younger. I always breathed a bit of a sigh of relief when we came up from the cave though. It’s amazing what’s going on under the ground!
