Discover The Novel Bean: Mayo’s Magical New Café and Book Shop

I’m always delighted to see a new shop opening – especially one with a bit of magic – and The Novel Bean is exactly that. Some news sites have called it Mayo’s newest café, but it’s so much more. I popped in today to see for myself, and it’s safe to say this place is something special.

The moment you step inside, you’re met with a gorgeous gift area showcasing products from over 50 independent Irish makers. There’s food, cards, unique gifts, and the widest range of socks I’ve ever seen. (I have a soft spot for socks – probably because most of mine are either missing or full of holes!) I bought a couple of Christmas presents too.

There was a steady queue during my visit, so I didn’t stay for a drink or bite to eat, but I did spot freshly baked scones, cookies, and tempting cakes on display.

From the outside, The Novel Bean looks modest in size, but inside it’s a bit like a TARDIS. After the gift area and small seating space near the counter, the shop opens up into an impressively large bookshop. I loved exploring this part – there’s a fantastic range of titles, and there’s even a charming children’s corner that feels like a tiny fairyland.

The man behind The Novel Bean is Cathal Kelly. I’ve followed Cathal online for years; in 2024 he completed an incredible 2,200-kilometre walk to raise money for charity. His commitment to community shines through in this new space too. He told me that The Novel Bean recently hosted its first book reading, and he hopes to run many more events and build a real community hub in Swinford.

I’d like to wish Cathal and The Novel Bean the very best of luck with this wonderful new venture. You can find them on Instagram here.
