Sligo On Ice – So Much Fun!

Sligo On Ice has returned to Sligo town, and I headed over to see what it’s all about. It’s a proper ice-skating rink—no plastic “ice” here—and it’s absolutely brilliant!

Years ago, I used to skate regularly (back when I was younger and a lot more flexible!), but this time I struggled right from the start… I couldn’t even get my skates on! Thankfully, the staff were lovely, and Sean kindly helped me out.

I wasn’t quite brave enough to step onto the ice without one of the plastic bears, so I held onto mine for dear life! After a few laps I considered abandoning it, but decided not to push my luck and risk an injury.

The whole experience brought me right back to my teenage years—with 80s music playing and the feeling (or at least the illusion!) that I was gliding effortlessly around the rink. It was great to see such a mix of ages there, from families with small kids and teenagers to fellow middle-aged adventurers. I met some lovely people too, including the family above. You can see in my video just how much fun I had!

The staff are friendly and welcoming, and there’s even a medic on site if needed. The atmosphere is fantastic, and I saw plenty of people finishing their session only to queue again straight away for another go—that says it all.

The rink is located in Queen Maeve Square, making it easy to grab a coffee or something to eat before or after skating. And since you’re in town, it’s the perfect chance to do some Christmas shopping—Sligo has two special Christmas markets this year: Sligo Indoor Market at The Canopy, and Sligo Christmas Market at The Quayside.

Sligo On Ice is open every day until January 18th (closed only on Christmas Day). I definitely recommend booking ahead, especially for evening sessions, which can fill up quickly.
