If you are looking for a beautiful walk, that won’t exhaust you, but will fill you with joy, check out the Ballisodare Union Wood Walk. It’s flat, it’s short, and it’s lovely for all ages.

It’s home to the Gnomes of Union Wood, filled with birds and beautiful birdsong, a little library, and even a soother tree for the little people who want to give up their soothers.

I’ve been there twice in a week, and I still haven’t found all the gnomes, so it’s a great excuse to go back, not that I need an excuse, because it’s just lovely.

There are two ways to get to the walk, and even I haven’t got lost (yet!) and I’m always getting lost. You can go via the pitch/community centre side. You’ll see the walk entrance. Or you can go from the Main Street in Ballisodare, through the housing estate and under the railway bridge.

If you go via the pitch follow the sign for Ballisodare, don’t take the left to Union Wood. You’ll see a sign for the gnomes, and you’ll start to see them if you look closing.

You’ll come to the Gate Lodge and the little library. Keep a look out for the friendly robins.

At the time of writing this post (Easter 2025) there’s the most beautiful arch at the Gate Lodge, it’s decorated with flowers and eggs, and it’s stunning.

You can scan the QR code when you are on the walk, and it’ll bring you to the Instagram account of the Gnomes of Union Wood. You can follow them from here too.

Well done to all involved on such a lovely walk, it’s really worth checking out.
