Sunday roasts, seaweed baths, and Shells – celebrating 57 years of me!

Firstly, a big thank you to everyone who wished me happy birthday, it’s not every day that your birthday is trending on twitter, but that’s what happened! I didn’t just celebrate on one day; I got a few days out of it, and I intend to get one more day at least out of it!

My friend Sian took me for breakfast on Friday, which was just lovely, and the perfect start to Heart of Sligo day. I’ve written more about that here.

Lucy and Laurence came over on Sunday and we went to Honestly in Strandhill for lunch. They’ve just started serving Sunday roast, and although the blue cheese fries were screaming at me, the roast won. I can always get the fries another time. The roast was amazing, melt in the mouth organic beef, and all the trimmings, including a huge Yorkshire pudding, and horseradish sauce (both quite rare to get here), and proper homemade gravy.

What I love about Honestly is that they cater for everyone. Gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, there is something for all diets on the menu, and the staff know what they are talking about. The chips for the gluten-free meals are cooked in a separate fryer, so no issues with cross contamination. This isn’t an advert – I know a few people think I get free food, it hardly ever happens, and we paid for our meals (and everything else I mention on this blog post).

Monday was my actual birthday, a pretty naff day to have a birthday, but I booked the day off work and took myself off to Strandhill. Andy had got me a voucher for Voya for Christmas, so I had a seaweed bath, which was lovely, and one of my favourite things to do. I also had breakfast in Shells Café, a healthy Buddha bowl – a miracle! Mind you I did buy myself a slice of pecan pie for later. I was going to go to Mammy Johnston’s for an ice cream sundae, but I was too full up, so I’ll save that pleasure for another day.

Even though the weather was grey and dull there’s always something relaxing about watching the waves and listening to them crashing on the rocks. There were a lot of people walking along the beach, but I’m a fair-weather walker and the wind was biting so I gave that a miss.

On the way home I stopped at SuperValu and they were giving their Valentine flowers away, so I got a beautiful bunch of roses free! That was just the icing on the cake!

Thanks again for the birthday wishes, very much appreciated. I tried to reply to everyone, apologies if I missed anyone out.
