Some Sligo News – December 2024

There have been a few things happening in Sligo recently, and I thought it might be an idea to add them all in one blog post, as I know not everyone is on social media.

Firstly Homebase has gone into liquidation, this is for all the stores in Ireland and RTE has the full story. There is a sale on in the Sligo store at the moment, in case that’s of interest to anyone. The Range has been mentioned when it comes to the shop in Sligo – you can read more about that here.

Sligo on Ice is in full swing, it’s in the Queen Maeve Square in Sligo town, and it’s real ice (I’ve seen a few people asking that question). You can find out more and book tickets here.

Born Clothing opened in The Canopy a couple of weeks ago. It’s in the former Ruby Lane shop, and it’s great to see a new shop open in Sligo.

There’s a lovely pop-up shop next to Osta Cafe and Wine Bar. FabricOasis has some lovely gift ideas, and all the products are made from recycled materials sourced from charity shops. Find them on Facebook.

I’m not sure if Cafe Souperb in The Canopy will re-open, it’s been closed for a number of weeks now, if anyone knows you might let me know.

Still in The Canopy, I see that there will be a new shop in the old H. Samuel unit, I’m not sure if this is just for the month of December or something permanent.

I heard rumours of a market going into Queen Maeve Square but I haven’t seen anything else about it. I think this would be a lovely idea, it would encourage more people to visit Sligo and I know how popular the market in Galway is. Carrick on Shannon will also have a lot of events for Christmas too.

The Canopy’s iconic Santa, played by local volunteer Robert McDaid, is back this year. Again Santa’s gifts will be plastic-free. Santa will greet children for free, with donations encouraged for the North West Hospice. All proceeds from Santa’s fee will be donated to Sligo Cancer Support Centre. Santa arrives on Thursday 5th December, and will be there every Thursday to Saturday up to Saturday 21st December. The pic at the top of the blog is the Christmas village in The Canopy – it’s beautiful.

FunkĂ© featured in The Irish Times over the weekend. I’m a big fan of her food and I’m sort of gutted that I featured the Jollof Sauce on the blog because it’s been out of stock in the local SuperValu shops since, next time I see it I’ll buy a few jars.

Jalan Jalan in Sligo town has been renamed to Bia Bao, I’m told the menu is the same but the restaurant has had a wonderful makeover.

December 6th and 7th, there will be a drive-in-movie event at the ATU Sligo. Benbulben FC invites you to gather your loved ones & join them for a heartwarming Christmas Drive in Movie Night. ***Bring your own snacks*** Booking: https://www.eventbrite.ie/cc/christmas-drive-in-movies-sligo-3813743

Revamp your wardrobe with the Cairde Great Big Clothes Swap. December 7th and 8th in The Canopy, Sligo. Full details: https://fb.me/e/41CU3uYo2

Rathcormac Craft Village Christmas Festival is on the 14th and 21st of December. Santa will be there too, details above. The 7th has been cancelled due to the storm.

There are just two Sundays left of the Strandhill People’s Market for 2024. Sunday December 8th – 11am -4pm and Sunday December 15th -11am-4pm.

For those of you who have been missing Achonry Farmers Market, they have two special evening Christmas Markets will be taking place on Saturday December 14th and 21st from 4-8pm the Knocknashee Community Hub & Café!
Santa will be there and you can book a visit here.

I hope you’ve enjoyed my Sligo round-up of news. If you like what I do you might consider leaving me a tip.
