Sligo News – March 2024

I’ve spotted a few things online that I think might be of interest. It’s very hard to find information when it’s dotted all over the place, and there isn’t one central location. I’m always asked for recommendations, and I do have a blog post of suggestions of things to do in Sligo. I can’t recommend places to stay though as I’m a local, and haven’t stayed anywhere, but I’d suggest calling to the Sligo Tourist Office on O’Connell Street.

The access to the Caves of Keash is temporarily closed for lambing season. This happens every year, but not many people seem to know about it. It will reopen on May 1st, 2024.

The OPW sites are back open for the season. I’ve linked each one, so that you can see more information, including the opening days and hours. In Sligo: Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery and Sligo Abbey. There’s also Parkes Castle, just over the Sligo border in Leitrim.

It’s worth remembering that it’s free to visit all three locations on the first Wednesday of the month. Check out the other Free Wednesday OPW sites in Ireland.

An article appeared on The Journal today Carrowkeel Passage Tombs being vandalised. This is just shocking to read and I really hope that something will be done. Read the full article on The Journal.

It’s very sad that people don’t respect our heritage. A couple of years ago I was on a guided walk up Knocknashee, one of the women who was with the organiser was climbing up the cairns, when I challenged her, I was told to ‘cop on’. Her response was ‘Sure, don’t people walk on graves every day of the week’. Something really needs to be done to protect these ancient sites.

  1. Thanks so much for this Val – even us locals (or maybe, especially us locals) need updates. Great to know about the free days too if we have people visiting or planning to visit.

I agree that it’s equally sad and frustrating to see the lack of respect for these wonderful sites.
