It’s bluebell season – one of my favourite times of the year. There’s something so special about walking in a forest surrounded by bluebells, they look absolutely beautiful and they smell amazing. I know many of you might not have access to Irish forests, so I’ve done a couple of little videos for you to experience them virtually.
The video above is from Derreen Woods in Roscommon. This is in Knockvicar, just outside Boyle, and it’s well worth a visit. I’d recommend going early in the morning as it’s a very popular place.
This video is from Hazelwood in Sligo. Another place that’s well worth a visit, there is a lovely looped walk (that I always get lost on – but that’s just me and my shocking sense of direction).

There are a few bluebells at the River Walk in Coolaney, this is a beautiful walk and well worth a visit. Coolaney has won numerous tidy town awards, and it’s easy to see why, the village is a credit to all the volunteers.

Union Wood is absolutely stunning, there are two entrances – Ballygawley and Collooney. The bluebells above are at the Collooney side of the walk, there’s limited parking on this side, so probably another place to visit early in the day. You can also walk there from the Ballygawley side – and there’s plenty of parking there.

Hazelwood Forest, Sligo, is above. There are patches of bluebells dotted all over the place here, head off and have an explore. This is a great place for a picnic too.

Hazelwood is also part of the Yeats Trail, so keep a look out for the sculpture on the shores of Lough Gill.

Derreen Wood in Roscommon is the image above. There are thousands of bluebells here and they are just spectacular. I’ve never seen anything like it, it’s just such a special place and so worth a visit.

So there are just a few suggestions of places to find bluebells, you can also read my post about the bluebells at the foot of Benbulben, I did go looking for them recently but they weren’t in bloom, so I’m either too early or too late.
