Fowleys Falls – A Leitrim Gem

When you mention Leitrim and waterfalls everyone immediately thinks of Glencar and yes it is beautiful but it’s very rare to go there and be on your own. If you are looking for a beautiful forest walk with a cascading waterfall, Fowley’s Falls is the place for you.

To get there if you are coming from Sligo. Drive to Manorhamilton and follow the signs from there to Rossinver. Don’t take the first left turn signposting Fowley’s Falls or you’ll go all round the houses (although the scenery is beautiful) – take the second signposted turn – it’s on your left. You’ll see Rossinver Community Centre on your right, keep going and you’ll see a carpark on your right – you can park there and walk down (just follow the sounds of the water). I had sheep to greet me 😉

The best time to visit is after a spell of heavy rain when the Glenanniff River will be in full flow and you’ll get to see the waterfall at its best. Years ago it was possible to get closer to the river but it’s now been fenced off so you’ll mostly be looking from above. This isn’t a bad thing though because it was fairly steep to get down there and you could easily lose your footing.

You’ll see lots of wildlife, including birds and butterflys, it’s a perfect place for a picnic. If you want to make a day of it head to The Organic Centre which is nearby or turn right from the carpark and go uphill to enjoy some amazing views. You can visit nearby Lough Melvin too – the final destination of the Glenanniff River.
