If you can’t decide between a forest walk or a stroll along the beach, Lissadell is the perfect place to have both. As you drive from the village of Carney, you’ll spot a little gate lodge on the left-hand side. Turn down there and you’ll find a small lay-by with space for a few cars. If that’s full, there’s more parking further down near Lissadell Beach.

The forest walk itself is short and flat, running alongside the shoreline. It’s an easy wander through the trees, with the sound of the sea never too far away.

You’ll cross a lovely wooden bridge and, after a short distance, come to a bird hide, which is a peaceful spot to stop for a while and take in the surroundings.

I loved this walk. The forest felt so calm and peaceful, and I just caught the tail end of bluebell season which made it even prettier. The bridge is one of my favourite parts, and through the trees you’ll catch glimpses of the ocean and the oyster farm.

If you fancy stretching the legs a little more, the beach walk is equally lovely. You’ll have beautiful views of the mountains, and at the far end of the beach there’s a small ruined building. I’ve heard people say it was once an old changing room for swimmers, although I’m not sure how true that is. Either way, it adds a little mystery and charm to an already beautiful place.
