Hazelwood Reopens After Storm Eowyn

I was delighted to read that Hazelwood reopened at the weekend. This beautiful forest was decimated during Storm Eowyn, back in January, and Coilte have been busy clearing the paths and repairing the damage.

I went to visit on Saturday morning and it’s sad to see how many trees were lost during the storm, but new trees have been planted to replace the ones that were lost. I was delighted to see that the ‘yoga’ tree is still standing, that’s what I call it anyway 🙂

Some of the fallen trees have been left to decompose naturally to promote biodiversity, and visitors are asked to stay on the forest paths and not to enter the woodland. You can read the full report on the Sligo Walks website.

It’s lovely to see the bluebells starting to bloom, I’d say in another couple of weeks the place will be full of them, and you can see them from the paths, so you don’t need to go into the woodland areas.

I also spotted a heart on a tree, well it looks like a heart to me. Hazelwood is such a beautiful place to visit, it’s so close to Sligo town, and it’s such a haven for wildlife, it would do you good just to go and listen to the bird song.
