I’m delighted to say that our power was restored yesterday evening. When the lights came back on I just sat and looked at them, half waiting for them to go off again. To be honest I was doing OK, apart from the very cold mornings when I thought the water in my eyes had frozen (possibly a bit dramatic!)
I have seen others struggling though, and it was very hard when you were given an estimated date of power restoration, but that came and went, and then our date was over a week away. What really made me sad was reading the nasty comments to people who were stuggling. Mental health is different for everyone, telling people to ‘cop on’, or how worse off other people are is not a helpful thing to do.
Telling people to go outside and do something to take their minds off the situation is also not helpful. Some people don’t have the energy, or the want to do that.
People just having digs, and then the pile-on happens. I know some of these people, and I’m disappointed in them, I’d have hoped for better. I’m a firm believer in the phrase ‘if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything.’ You don’t know what anyone has been going through in the lead up to the storm. You don’t know if this was the final straw. It costs you nothing to be kind.
On the other hand, there have been some wonderful people in our community, and I wrote about them here.
I’d like to ask people to just stop and think before they post.
