I visited the beautiful Derreen ‘bluebell’ woods, just outside Knockvicar in Roscommon yesterday, and I’m heartbroken at what I saw. The lovely walkway through the forest, has now been replaced by gravel, so that cars can drive down to a car park. You can see the photo on the left from last year, and the one on the right from this year.

Trees have been torn down to make room for the car park, and it’s so awful to see such destruction. I understand that the small carpark that was there was probably not fit for purpose, but maybe a field beside the woods could have been used instead.

I fear that without the walkway, people will be walking on the bluebells to avoid the traffic, and it’s only wide enough for one way traffic, and I think it’s all going to be a bit messy. It was lovely when the woods was just for pedestrians, and families could enjoy the walk without worrying about cars.

It’s all just very sad, in my opinion, and it will never be the same as it was.
