Sligo Food News – January 2024

It’s a fairly quiet month regarding food news this month, there are some things of interest though, including a new restaurant opening and some jobs. There’s also news from the new Sligo Festival – Bríd Festival Sligo.

The photo above is Beef and Bourbon Stew in Walker 1781, it was my first time to eat in there and it was very nice. I liked the wood burning stove and the staff are very friendly.

From The Ground Up 2020 in Tubbercurry has had a transformation. Jenny was serving light bites before in her outdoor seating area, but she’s now transformed her shop for indoor eating and there’s a fantastic breakfast and lunch menu, with something for everyone. I had the pancakes and they were some of the best I’ve ever had. The image at the top of the blog is also From The Ground Up 2020.

O’Briens Café, Sligo are looking for an experienced full-time café supervisor. Send your CV, outlining your supervisory experience and your availability, to mary@obrienssligo.com or drop it into Mary in the café.

There’s a new restaurant opening in County Sligo. Grá Bistro will open this month in Dromore West. I don’t have any other information yet, but you can check out their Facebook page.

Cawleys in Tubbercurry reopen on January 19th, after their Christmas break. If you haven’t been there put it on your list, such a warm welcome and fabulous food. The afternoon tea is amazing!

The new Bríd Festival Sligo is encouraging people to host a St Brigid Supper. A traditional custom associated with St Brigid was a festive supper consisting of colcannon and apple cake. In line with tradition the festival are inviting people to prepare this meal for their own table on St Brigid’s Day. Sligo Nursing Homes, Day Centres, coffee shops, restaurants and other communal gatherings are invited to put colcannon and apple cake on their menus for St Brigid’s Day.

‘We hope everyone will embrace traditions such as eating the festive meal for St Brigid’s Day Colcannon and apple cake, which are made from wholesome ingredients taken from the land, brought to the table for sharing.’ Catherine Fanning.

I’ll share more about the festival and some of the events taking place in the coming days.
