Culture Night Sligo 2023

Culture Night is back on September 22nd and takes place countrywide. This is a day (and night) where groups and organisations open their doors to all, with pop up shows, exhibitions, live theatre, creative workshops, family fun, and best of all – it’s all completely free! Suitable for ages, and all interests. There are a lot of events happening in Sligo, and I thought I’d write a post about some highlights.

The first one I want to tell you about is a very special one. For those of you living in the Doorly Park area of Sligo, the newly refurbished Gate Lodge will be open and you can visit Local – by Michele Feeney. Drop by and join in the incredible conversation and immerse yourself in the rich history of Garavogue River. 6.30 – 9pm. No Booking Required

Sausages on the Nobel Ship. Hear stories about WB Yeats journey to Sweden to receive the Nobel Prize in December 1923. Yeats Building Hyde Bridge, Sligo. Time: 5pm-6pm, 6pm-7pm & 7pm-8pm.

Melissa Ní Mhaolanfaidh Tour Guide & Historian with Sligo Walking Tours will be giving a guided history talk on the 22nd September 2023 at 5.30pm. This event is supported by Sligo Tidy Towns and Sligo Bay Catchment Rivers Trust. This talk will cover the history of the river and its impact on the development of Sligo and taking in local landmarks following the river course through the town. The walk will commence in Lower Quay Street with a planned duration of 75 minutes concluding in JF Kennedy parade. No booking necessary and all are welcome.

Vivid Studio, John Street, Sligo are hosting an Art Exhibition ‘Urban to Rural Sligo’. This will be open all day from 11am until later in the evening. No Booking Required

Maeve McKenna and friends, poetry reading will begin at 3.30pm – 4.30pm in Sligo Library. No booking required.

The Hawk’s Well foyer turns into a pop-up photo studio as kids get to create and snap a fun portrait of their parents. I See You Like This is an acclaimed interactive art experience created by Jessica Wilson with designer Matilda Woodroofe to celebrate the fascinating relationship that is at the heart of individual identity – between parent and child. 4.00 – 6.00pm. No booking required.

Join Music Generation Sligo for an extraordinary concert displaying young musical talent at one of Sligo’s most historic buildings Sligo Abbey, a Dominican friary which has been treasured in Sligo town centre since the mid-thirteenth century. 4.30 – 6.00pm. Thomas Connolly’s Pub will have the Old Market Swing from 5.30pm to kickstart your evening.

Sligo Youth Theatre present a RADIO PLAY. H.G. Welles’ “THE WAR OF THE WORLDS” adapted by Orson Welles, directed by Peter Vamos this Friday 22nd Sept for Culture Night in Sligo, and performed by some fab members of SYT in The Fridge, lower Quay St, Sligo. Sligo Gospel Choir will begin their fourteenth year with a concert featuring a programme of inspirational, uplifting and popular gospel songs. Sligo Presbyterian Church, Church Street, Sligo – are hosting an eclectic feast of food associated with a variety of countries will be provided by the Haven, an initiative which welcomes newcomers to Sligo and helps people form friendships here. 7.00 – 8.30pm. No booking required.

Cramore Co-op are hosting an art and craft exhibition and workshop in their community garden. 5.30pm – 7.00pm. No booking required.

Let’s draw together! An evening of sketching and conversation. Open to all ages and skill levels. With exhibiting artist Wayne O Connor on hand with tips and advice, this event invites you to draw together with inspiration from Waynes solo show “The Minds Eye”, plus a variety of other subject matter and references provided on the night. Hyde Bridge Gallery 6.30- 8pm. No booking required.

Blue Raincoat Theatre host storytelling, drawing and clay workshops. Family friendly. 6.30 – 8.30pm. The Factory, Sligo.

Culture Night 2023 at The Model promises to be another colourful night of creativity, art and music. This year they will start off with the opening of ‘The Age / L’Età’ by acclaimed UK artist and winner of the Max Mara Prize Emma Talbot, in what is her first ever Irish solo show. Sligo Global Kitchen will serve delicious food from around the world and the finest contemporary DJs will keep the crowds entertained until late with an eclectic mix of dance and electronic music. All events at Culture Night at The Model are free of charge and there is no need to book in advance. Sligo Rape Crises Centre (SRCC) are hosting an art auction to raise much-needed funds for their services. Full details above.

Carmel Gunning and guests will be at Caheny’s Bar, Mail Coach Road, Sligo, for an evening of traditional music. 7.00pm – 8.30pm.

ArdVoltas are hosting Secret Sonic Cinematheque next Friday 22nd of September 7-9pm. Off Main Street, Ballisodare, Sligo.

The EKhos will be in Osta Cafe and Wine Bar from 7.30pm. No booking required, but get there early.

Kitchen Sink Stories upstairs at Lillies Bar, Sligo. Open mic Storytelling Night. 7.30-9.30pm. No booking required.

Hawk’s Well Theatre and Sligo Baroque Festival present Tradroque – a juxtaposition of Irish traditional and baroque music traditions featuring Sligo Baroque Orchestra and an ensemble of traditional musicians including Michael Rooney on harp, Liam Kelly on flute, Leonard Barry on pipes and Seamie O’Dowd on guitar. Shells Cafe host a very special night of comedy with the Sligo Comedy Club. Expect the unexpected, with stand-up, improvisation and storytelling from some of Ireland’s finest comedians. Adults only. No booking required 8.00 – 9.30pm.

Keep a look out for the Toxic Dogs as they roam the streets of Sligo town between 8.00-10.00pm. Tag them on social media if you see them – #toxicdogensemble

Celebrate culture night with Sligo Folk Park by taking a trip through the world of Irish music.This FREE EVENT will be hosted by Riverstown’s very own Damien Dwyer from 8pm to 9pm. Come along for a bit of ceol agus craic.

Open traditional Irish Music Friday nights at Earleys Bar, Bridge Street, Sligo. Musicians, singers, dancers welcome 9.30pm approx. Adults only.
