Prime Mistake

I was watching Prime Time on Rte1 on Thursday night.

I couldn’t believe what I was watching. The discussion was about the proposed carers stragety which has been scrapped due to the cut backs. Miriam O’Callaghan was interviewing Maire Hoctor who is the Minister for State and is responsible for older people. Well the Minister became flustered and didn’t appear to know what she was talking about. The interview wasn’t live as we could hear clearly as Miriam was telling her not to worry as she makes mistakes like that all the time and its not live anyway. Except someone in RTE made the mistake of airing it (or maybe it wasn’t a mistake).

Once again it makes me wonder how some people have jobs.

  1. More serious point: RTE has, in the past, indicated that some interviews are pre-recorded. Fine. It has NEVER indicated that interviews are re-recorded, which is not fine. This a was a shambles and each successive ‘take’ by the Minister was worse than the previous. Who says RTE never did comedy?

  2. No, I would be surprised if that was the case. Ministerial minders would let their views be known – and how – if they had a sniff it was done on purpose.

Even if Ministers dont complain ‘officialdom’ takes it onself to express the umbrage. The speech at Sligo General Hospital by the Tanaiste on Friday March 6th and the attitudes of the HSE beforehand to the campaign committee protesting on cancer services underline that impression for me.

I felt RTE was the one ‘caught out’ here – it had never, ever indicated over the years that re-recording of interviews with politicians was an option, let alone a practice. Not impressed….apart from the comedy aspect of it all.
