If you are a regular reader of the blog, you will know that one of my favourite things to do is to go off exploring. I love getting up early, hopping in the car, and seeing where the road takes me, I often take detours before I reach my destination. That’s how I ended up in Drumsna.

I was heading to Carrick on Shannon, but I decided to visit Kilculkin Cascade Waterfall, it’s just a short drive from Carrick, but it’s not very well known. It’s a peaceful place for a pitstop, and even to have a picnic.

From the carpark at the waterfall, I turned left, instead of turning right back into Carrick on Shannon. I went along quiet country roads and ended up in Drumsna.

The bridge is not for the faint-hearted! I had to reverse back twice because there were lorries that wouldn’t wait for me.

So, keep that in mind if you are on that side of the village. The bridge is lovely though (when you aren’t on it!) it featured in the movie Jimmy’s Hall. There is a nice video about the movie being filmed there below if you want a look.
The Sligo to Dublin Road used to go through Drumsna until the bypass was built in the mid-1990s. I stopped the car and had a walk down by the river. It was just me and the geese!

There are picnic benches, so it would be a lovely place for a picnic and just to watch the world go by.

I saw a sign for a graveyard; it’s one of the smallest graveyards that I’ve ever seen, and well worth a visit.

It contains the grave of Thomas Heazle Parke, who was a surgeon, and according to this article, the first Irishman to cross Africa: https://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/abroad/thomas-heazle-parke-the-first-irishman-to-cross-africa-1.3760211

I loved the old phone box in the village too; there are a few of them around Leitrim. I know of one in Keshcarrigan and Mohill.

I’m sharing the photos I took in Drumsna here, I hope you like them.
