A Post Box with a Difference in Roscommon

I was out and about exploring in Roscommon and Leitrim yesterday and I spotted this post box on my travels. I’ve posted it on my social media channels, but I know that some of you aren’t on there, and it really deserves a blog post of its own.

These old post boxes are dotted around Ireland, usually in rural locations, to save people going into towns to post letters. I’d say at some stage there was a shop that sold stamps near this one. They are still in use today, we have one just down the road from us.

This particular post box is closed at the moment, due to birds nesting in it. It’s so lovely to see it. I didn’t get too close, I just looked from a distance. The post box dates back to the reign of Edward VII, when Ireland was under British rule. You can read more about royal cyphers on letter boxes on this blog post.

I hope the birds enjoy their new home. It’s a good reminder to keep a look out for unusual or different things when you are out and about.

  1. Aye, there used to be one a brisk walk from here…. one day i went there with a letter for NL, only to find debris and track marks. The whole letterbox plus part of the pillar had been taken.

[I imagine it being stolen and sold to “the highest bidder”]
