Leitrim to host Ireland’s First National Trail Conference to celebrate trails, community, and the great outdoors

Outdoor enthusiasts, trail builders and community groups are set to descend on Leitrim next month for Ireland’s inaugural National Trail Conference, which will take place from August 31 to September 3 in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Organised by Leitrim Development Company, this landmark event will kick off with a variety of free and ticketed excursions designed to showcase the natural beauty and outdoor potential of County Leitrim.

From family-friendly orienteering in Derrycarne Woods to kayaking and stand-up paddling on Lough Allen, plus a unique opportunity to discover North Leitrim’s stunning waterfalls and walk Alpacas, the event will be a treat for anyone who enjoys the outdoors.

The conference from September 2nd and 3rd in Carrick-on-Shannon’s Landmark Hotel, is aimed at trail professionals, community groups and landowners and will feature keynote presentations, panel discussions, workshops, field trips, and networking opportunities. It will cover topics such as trail planning, design, maintenance, funding, and advocacy.

A hands-on trail-building workshop, led by seasoned trail builders, Mountain Meitheal North-West, will give participants the chance to apply their newfound knowledge and skills in a real-world setting ensuring they leave with valuable tools to contribute to their communities.

Events are open to all with early registration encouraged to secure a spot in the various activities and workshops.

Some of the excursions on offer include:

–       Family Orienteering, September 1st: a fun introduction to orienteering for families in the beautiful Derrycarne Woods

–       Waterfall Discovery and Alpaca Tour, September 1st: a captivating day tour exploring stunning waterfalls including the hidden Scardon Waterfall, Glencar Waterfall and Ireland’s tallest waterfall, Sligo’s Devil’s Chimney. You’ll also visit Glencar’s Alpaca Farm and enjoy a delicious lunch at the nearby teaSHED.

–       Carrick Camino, August 31st: a 34km hike highlighting the stunning scenery around Carrick-on-Shannon, Miners Way and Leitrim Way

–        Slow Adventure Jackalope Cycling Tour, September 1st: a 10 km leisurely traffic-free cycle on the Shannon Blueway followed by a tour of the Shed Distillery, the home of Gunpowder Irish Gin

–       Lough Allen Adventure, September 1st:  adventure on the water with a kayak or SUP tour plus a relaxing retreat in our outdoor spa & wellness centre, all amidst the stunning scenery of Lough Allen.
