Introducing a Flavorful Fusion: Sligo Welcomes The Vibrant Tastes of Afro-Caribbean Cuisine at “FUNKÉ Afro-Caribbean Restaurant”

The culinary scene in Sligo town is about to get a vibrant and  mouthwatering makeover as “FUNKÉ,” a new Afro-Caribbean restaurant, opens its doors to the  public. Nestled in the heart of Sligo, with views of the Lady Erin Monument, this exciting addition  to the local dining landscape promises to take residents and visitors on a culinary journey through  the captivating flavors of Afro-Caribbean cuisine.

“FUNKÉ” offers a tantalizing experience that captures the essence of the Caribbean islands and  the rich cultural tapestry of the African diaspora right in the heart of Sligo. The restaurant is the  heartfelt dream of Chef Funké Egberongbe, a talented and passionate culinary artist who journeyed from Nigeria as a refugee to Ireland.

She and her family spent a decade in the challenging conditions of Direct Provision at Globe  House in Sligo, where her culinary skills remained dormant due to restrictions on cooking.

Chef Funké’s journey is deeply personal, and “FUNKÉ” is not just a restaurant to her—it’s a  testament to her and her family’s resilience, a symbol of her love for her new home, and a  celebration of her heritage. Her struggles, her aspirations, and her triumphs are all woven into the  fabric of “FUNKÉ.”

In addition to delighting diners with exceptional cuisine, the restaurant is committed to bringing  together the multi-cultural layers of Sligo community. The restaurant actively seeks out local  suppliers and uses sustainable and fresh ingredients whenever possible. “FUNKÉ” also plans to

engage with the local community through various events and initiatives, fostering cultural  exchange and creating a vibrant atmosphere for everyone to enjoy.

Chef Funké has not only brought her heritage to the dining tables of Sligo, but has also spent the  past few years perfecting her own signature Jollof Sauce, which is for sale at Supervalu Ireland. This sauce, a true embodiment of Afro-Caribbean flavors, adds an extra layer of authenticity and  excitement to her dishes and will be for sale at the restaurant too.

What sets “FUNKÉ” apart is its commitment to delivering an authentic and unforgettable dining  experience rooted in Afro-Caribbean culture. The restaurant’s warm and inviting ambiance,  adorned with colorful Afro-Caribbean decor and reggae and Afrobeat tunes in the background,  sets the stage for a memorable meal. The menu features a diverse array of dishes, each carefully  crafted to showcase the rich tapestry of flavors and textures of the Caribbean and the African  diaspora. For Chef Funké, each dish on the menu is a labor of love and a tribute to her heritage.

“Our mission at ‘FUNKÉ’ is to share our love for Afro-Caribbean cuisine with the people of Sligo.  We want our guests to feel like they’ve embarked on a culinary journey to the heart of the islands,  discovering the beauty of our culture through our food. My own journey to this point has been  one of challenges and triumphs, and I’m excited to share a part of my story with each and every  guest who walks through our doors,” says Chef Funké Egberongbe.

“FUNKÉ” is located on Grattan street Street, Sligo. The restaurant will open this weekend.
