Spotlight on Drumshanbo

I’ve been in Drumshanbo, Co. Leitrim quite a lot over the last few months and I think it’s a place you might be interested in. For a small town there is a lot happening so here are just some things worth note:

The floating boardwalk over Acres Lake. You can actually walk on water! It’s a lovely walk, watching the dragonflies darting around the waterlilies. The water is so clear you can see the tiny fish swimming. It’s a beautiful walk.

The boardwalk meets up with the Blueway, so you can cycle from Drumshanbo into Leitrim Village. If you don’t have a bike you can hire one from Electric Bike Trails…this is on my to do list.

Stand up paddle in Drumshanbo is available at Leitrim Surf. This one I have done and loved! Well worth doing. Or take to a canoe with Adventure Gently.

Also at Acres Lake is a fantastic visitor centre. Sliabh An Iarainn Visitor Centre is free to visit, you can find out the history of Drumshanbo, listen to music from the area and even send a virtual postcard to your friends.

If you’ve worked up an appetite at the lake check out Jinny’s Tearooms, just across the road. This is an inspired new food experience offering specialty teas and coffees, with delicious snacks, and light bites with emphasis on wholesome, local ingredients. With an award-winning on-site bakery, Jinny’s appeals to families, cyclists and those seeking sustenance after a walk on water!

Fancy a dip? Check out the Drumshanbo Outdoor Swimming Pool. Also located at Acres Lake, you could spend the day here for sure.

The Shed Distillery Shop

Go on a tour of the Shed Distillery, home of Drumshanbo Gunpowder Gin,  Sausage Tree Vodka and Drumshanbo Irish Whiskey. You can visit the distillery and find out how the drinks are made….but it’s so much more than a tour, read more here. The Shed prides itself on traditional distillation using medieval copper stills and is the first multi-purpose distillery of its kind in Ireland, you will visit the distillery on the tour. Have a bite to eat in the Jackalope Cafe too.

Fancy seeing Drumshanbo from a different angle? Check out Moorlands Equestrian Centre, this is a family run riding school catering for all ages and abilities, lovely off road scenic treks, indoor arena.
