Discover Community Groups in Leitrim: Activities and Resources

Following on from the success of the Sligo Community Groups blog post, I’m in the process of compiling a Leitrim one. Organisations Hosting Various Workshops and Courses

The Organic Centre in Rossinver host workshops, courses, and events throughout the year, covering so many different topics. https://www.theorganiccentre.ie/Learn/weekend-courses

Breffni Community Development CLG. They host a variety of groups, including a men’s group, women’s group, intercultural, art, craft, and support groups. They are weekly meet up groups held at Breffni Family Resource Centre in Carrick on Shannon, and are designed to build social connection, reduce isolation, support wellbeing and mental health and offer fun, creative and wellbeing focused activities. They also host Older Persons Groups / Memory Cafe/ Saol Nua (Supportive social group for adults with learning difficulties, mental health challenges and anxiety.
The Groups are drop in so need to book and they meet weekly at Breffni FRC, except the Memory Cafe which meets monthly. https://www.breffnifrc.ie/


Art and Craft

Anyone can paint! This is a social gathering for community, family, friends and holiday makers. The group is a chance to meet others, in a relaxed atmosphere, with a confidence boosting activity. “Contact me and find out where we are painting or let’s organise a class or 6.” https://www.instagram.com/vidavoom/

Leitrim School of Art provide art classes and workshops to the public in all age groups. Located in Drumshanbo and Ballinamore. Adult Classes and workshops include Ceramics, Creative Writing, Crochet, Drawing, Italian Language and Culture, Jewellery, Painting, Photography, Stained Glass and Willow Basket Weaving. https://www.leitrimartschool.ie/


Book Clubs

The Leitrim Library branches have book clubs. Send an email to leitrimlibrary@leitrimcoco.ie to see which book clubs suits you best.

Drama
The Rabbit’s Riot Theatre Company facilitate creative workshops throughout the year and are always eager to welcome anyone who wishes to participate in their community productions. Follow them on Facebook or Instagram to keep updated! 


Heritage

Carrick-on-Shannon and District Historical Society. Voluntary historical society meeting monthly and offering talks & lectures since 1992. Membership open to those with historical interest. Facebook.


Intercultural Groups

Leitrim International Community Group. Celebrating and bringing awareness of different cultures living in county Leitrim. We organise events through the year for the community to attend. All are welcome to join our group. https://www.facebook.com/licgcarrick


LGBTQI+

Leitrim Pride. We’re a LGBTIQ+ focus group which celebrates diversity in our county and provides support to LGBTIQ+ people. Monthly activities are held which are free. We organised the yearly Pride celebration in Leitrim. We have a discord support channel but you must be a member of our group to be given access. Join us though attending our events. Men’s Groups

Breffni Men’s Group, Carrick on Shannon. This is a social group for men, and they meet weekly on Tuesdays from 11.00am to 1.00pm. The group involves a variety of activities.

The Carrick on Shannon men’s shed aims to work towards a future where all men have the opportunity to improve and maintain their health and well-being by participating in a community Men’s Shed. https://www.facebook.com/CaraDromaRuisc/


Parenting

Baby Bloom North West. Two age appropriate baby development classes. Caterpillar Club 6wks-6mths & Busy Bee’s 6-15mths. Safe supportive space for all parents and caregivers. Singing

Sport

Volunteering

Leitrim Volunteer Centre connects people who want to volunteer with organisations that need support. We promote community involvement, provide guidance for volunteers and groups and help strengthen local connections, inclusion and unity across Leitrim. Whether you’re looking to make a difference or are looking for volunteers, we are here to help make the connection. Women’s Groups

Breffni Women’s Group. If you are looking for a social outlet then please come along on Friday’s. Workshops are from 11am – 12pm followed by a chat and a cuppa. For more information please call 071 9622566.

Liatroma Women’s Collective. A community group empowering all women who live in county Leitrim through community, creativity, and collaboration. We cultivate spaces where women’s voices are heard, their skills are valued, and their growth is nurtured.
This is a small group that was created in September of 2025 to support women. No fees to join. Activities are free or have a small fee. Join us by following our social media channels. Facebook. Instagram.

Manorhamilton ICA Meets monthly and has various sessions including crafts, pottery, cooking, exercise, etc. A chance to forge friendships and try activities.

The North Leitrim Women’s Centre aims to support the holistic needs of women of all ages, cultures and religions through the provision of information, education, healthcare screening and social networking. Writing

Writers at The Dock, Carrick on Shannon. Every Saturday from 11am–12.30pm, writers gather in one of the rooms of The Dock to read and write and to exchange ideas about what makes good literature. Admission €5 per workshop. https://www.thedock.ie/communities/writers-at-the-dock-5


Nationwide


Macra. Ireland’s national voluntary organization for rural youth (ages 17-40), fostering personal growth and community involvement through activities in agriculture, sports, travel, public speaking, performing arts, and community service, aiming to support young people’s development and make rural life attractive. With a nationwide network of clubs, it provides a platform for social interaction, skill development, and adventure for young people with rural connections, evolving to include a near-even split between young men and women. https://macra.ie/
