It has been a while since I visited Troll Wood (Cartron Wood) in Leitrim, it’s just beside Parkes Castle and so worth a visit. It’s said on some pages that it’s an easy walk, but it is quite steep in places and can be slippery after rainfall. My thighs were burning the next day, and I’ll well used to walking.

You’ll be walking in a gorge, the air is so clear, and it’s so peaceful. The day I was there it was just me and the birds, and I enjoyed my walk alongside the river.

There are two new bridges, when I was there last there were makeshift bridges. There’s also a car park and a picnic table. It’s good to see progress, but the signs to warn people of trolls are gone. Although the fairies have moved in and there’s quite a large fairy village at the end of the walk.

There were a couple of trees/branches blocking the paths when I was there, so I had to crawl under one, and climb over the other. It isn’t a walk for pushchairs or wheelchairs.

If you are coming from Sligo, the woods are on the first left turn after Parkes Castle, you’ll see the carpark and the sign on the left of the road.

looks very peaceful!
